The Poor Boy

Many men will not commit until they are comfortable financially. Commitment means dates, gifts, and (gulp) eventually a ring. When it comes to finances, guys are super-careful and practical. Some guys are so practical that money issues can trump love if everything doesn't line up right.

The Stud

These are the pro athletes and rock stars of the world. It's great to land one of these guys, but you're probably nervous the whole time that he'll stray. When a guy can hook up with basically any girl he wants, he probably won't commit. And, if he does, it's a risky commitment.

The Horndog

Many men are out for sex...as much sex as they can get. Committing to one woman pretty much ruins this objective. And if a horndog commits to a woman, sometimes she can't keep up with his voracious sexual appetite, so he'll be gone.

The Bionic Worker

Workaholic men put in the long hours and have no time to think of a woman, let alone commit. They'd rather in the office, problem solving and making tons of cash.

A friend of mine recently went out with a guy, Sam. They had a good time, smooched a little, and went their separate ways for the night. So, the seed was planted for a second date at the very least.

But Sam's mistakes turned a promising situation into a bad one very quickly. You can find a list of his infractions below. Let me know which one (or more) is a deal breaker for you:

General Psycho Behavior

Allison woke up Sunday morning to a 7:30 "Good Morning Beautiful" text. Unless he was up at 5AM, it looked like Sam immediately texted Allison as soon as he woke up. That's a bit over-eager.

Seizing Poetic License on Pet Names

In the first text after the kiss night, it's a little strange to be dropping nicknames, even if it's something as general as "beautiful". It pushes things beyond casual way too fast.

Text Novels

Sam's texts shattered character limits. Allison would routinely receive 3-5 long texts in a row, all connected ramblings.

Over-Aggressive Texting

Sam wasn't keen on giving Allison much time to answer his texts before he was on the attack again.

Forcing a Date

Early on in his text assault, Sam asked Allison to get together during the upcoming week. But Allison said she was busy at work and offered to set something up for the next week. Instead of respecting her wishes, Sam fired back with "Well, I was really hoping to see you before the weekend."

Making A Woman Feel Wrong For How She Feels

It didn't take long for Sam's intense texting to turn Allison off. She politely explained that he was coming on a little strong but wanted to remain friends. Instead of accepting Allison's words, Sam argued that he wasn't a game player (implying that Allison was interested in games).

Inadvertent Insults

After accusing Allison of being a game-player, Sam went on to explain that he was a "grown man interested in a deep committed relationship." He instructed her to let him know if she was ever interested in the same. Allison came away from this exchange feeling like he called her a whore.

Hubris and Glibness

After the ordeal was over and Sam finally accepted he lost his grip on a chance at another date (and reality), he finished it off by texting that he "never had this happen before." What a stud he must be. Judging by his behavior, it was pretty easy for Allison to glean that he has probably been through this quite often.

So there you have it: eight infractions inside of a couple days of texting. Which of these do you think is the worst, and at what point would you be fed up? I explained to Allison that she should have been freaked out by the 7:30AM text, but hindsight is 20/20. So what are your thoughts? The use of exotic woods and burls from places outside of North America has seen increased use by handcrafters and wood turners over the past few years. Every visit to the exotic lumber yard shows an increase in varieties available that were not available in the past. Many hardwoods coming to the market have unique qualities and some provide unique challenges to the fine pen crafter.

Hardwoods such as Ziricote and Jobillo have been available from Central America with some sense of regular availability. Other burls from trees long since dead from the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa had harder to come by as locating the remains of the once dense forests are much harder. Many locals use age old techniques to find these treasures and eventually get them to wood workers.

These and many other exotic woods from Europe, Southeast Asia and even Russia are beginning to make inroads into local pen crafting shops. Quality wood is always paramount and the wood worker may have to have his wood sent out for stabilization in order to provide consistency throughout the finished pen. Some woods are not even classified as wood, but rather palms and bamboo. Bamboo is interesting to work with as layers of the wood are glued and pressed together to form pen blanks. Palm species exhibit striations and eyes throughout that provide interesting character to the handcrafted writing instrument.

By no means are these exotics taking the place of standard North American species for pen makers, but they are making inroads. Still highly popular are the Quilted Poplars, Walnuts, Elms, Maples and Oaks still make fine writing pens. They are relatively inexpensive to obtain and the quality available is unbelievable.

Local wood workers and open crafters turn to African hardwoods such as Padauk, Zebrawood, Wenge, Blackwood and Ebony to produce exceptional pens. These additional sources also add to the amount of pens being made available to pen lovers all over. Wherever the source, pen crafters are inundated with ideas t hey can grow their businesses with.

With the addition of more and more exotic hardwoods, the pen crafter has decisions to make. What do they charge for their work? Are prices varied, or do they average prices to ensure continuity of their price lines? Having different prices for the same pens could force some customers to look elsewhere, but the savvy pen crafter can explain why their work is worth the extra cost. Sometimes it is as simple as less maintenance to retain the glossy finish.

Of course, not every customer will be happy with the selection, what they perceive the finish to be or the price of a handcrafted piece of work. It is very difficult to find a crafter with the willpower not to tell a customer that if they do not like their prices, to go buy the 99? pen at the big box store.

The value added price of time and effort must be accounted for and the handcrafter that does not take this into account and only prices by material cost alone, especially when dealing with expensive exotics will be shortly selling his/her stock at giveaway prices.
